Large Shrubs for Wyo-Braska (over 10' tall)

Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry (Amelanchier X grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance') Multiple stems are upright and highly branched forming a dense shrub It is adapted to a wide range of soils, and tolerates some drought. The spectacular white flowers borne in early spring are at first tinged with pink but later fade to white. The young leaves are purplish and the fall color is a brilliant red to orange. Good alternative plant for maple. Edible fruit attracts birds. Mature height and spread of 10-15'. Can be grown as a small tree with pruning.

American Plum (Prunus americana) It produces attractive masses of 3/4 - 1" white flowers in early spring prior to leaf emergence. The flowers are extremely fragrant. The plants are very prone to root suckering and usually form a thicket of growth from a single tree. Thus they are difficult to grow as a single specimen and should be used where a mass planting is desired. The 1" red to purple fruit are quite edible and can be used for jellies. They provide food and excellent habitat for wildlife. Very hardy. Mature hight and spread 10-12'. (Native plant)
Common Smokebush (Cotinus coggygria) Upright spreading shrub with open habit. Valued for the large frothy, smoky-silver to pink panicles that decorate the palnt from late June to September. Resembles puffs of smoke on the tips of the branches.  Green foliage turns purple in the fall. Drought tolerant. Can be cut to the ground each spring. Grow in a sunny, dry site. Tolerant of drought and salty or alkaline soils. Mature height 13', spread 10'. Xeriscape plant. Native to Wyo-Braska and the great plains.
Canada Red Cherry (Prunus virginiana v.Canada Red or v. Shubert Select) Redleafed variety of native chokecherry. A hardy pyramidal deciduous shrub with foliage that emerges green but turns reddish purple with age. It has clusters of white flowers in the spring. The fruit are red at first but turn black with maturity. Fruit is very attractive to birds. In the fall it turns orange and red. Mature height of 25' , spread of 20'
   
Fernleaf Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula 'Asplenifolia'). a low-branching, vase-shaped shrub, lends a lacy, fern-like, fine texture to the landscape. Leaves are narrow and have cut edges. Very small flowers in spring attract bees. Small fruits are eaten by birds. May be invasive. Mature height and spread 10-15'.
Tall Hedge Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula ‘Columnaris’) Tall, columnar shrub, used for screens and hedges as it stays narrow and does not need shearing. Insignificant  flowers turn to black berries eaten by birds. Can be invasive.  Glossy green leaves turn yellow in fall. Mature hight 10-20' spread 3-5'. 
Nannyberry (Viburnum lentago) Upright, vased shaped shrub, While flat-topped flowers in May turneing to Blue-black fruits that are good winter food for birds. Foliage shiny green in summer turning purple-red in fall. Excellent in shade or sun, moist or dry, very hardy. Mature height 20', spread 6-10'. Native to Eastern US)
