Garden Walk

July 23rd      3:00-7:00pm

It’s Theatre West Garden Walk Week in Wyobraska, with gardeners and homeowners from around the region anticipating the opportunity to see this year’s featured gardens.   At midweek the weatherman appeared to be cooperating with forecast high temperatures for Sunday predicted to well below last Sunday’s egg-frying highs.  The self-guided garden walk features six gardens in Scottsbluff and Gering.  It begins Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. and lasts until 7:00 p.m.

As always, the Theatre West Garden Walk highlights current garden and gardening trends in Wyobraska.  That being the case it would appear that fruits and vegetables are returning to the residential garden scene in Wyobraska, and that water features remain an important addition to many of the region’s residential landscapes.  In spite of early concerns about the recent heat wave stressing out the gardens, a mid-week assessment showed, not surprisingly, that the gardens came through with, well, I’ll go ahead and say it, flying colors.

Several years ago, the organizers moved the event from a late June date to a late July date.   While that might seem to put the walk in the hottest part of the summer, it did time the walk at the very beginning of the prime garden watching season for Wyobraska.  One characteristic of most native or well-adapted plants for Wyobraska gardens is that they are at their best from mid-July through mid-September.   So the Theatre West Garden Walk has become an ideal learning experience for the novice gardener or do-it-yourself home landscaper.   Garden and landscape plants that look attractive to you in the featured gardens are highly likely to perform just as well for you in your own  garden or landscape.

But the walk also remains popular with experience gardeners, too, because they know that they are sure to find several new plants to try, or one or two new plant combinations, a new idea for a patio, garden path, or garden art, or perhaps just have the opportunity to talk gardening with a lot of other avid plant-lovers.

Tickets are $10.00 at most local garden centers before the walk or $12.00 at any of the garden locations on the day of the walk.  See you there!
